Behind These Walls

I was small hiding in an abandon building in the winter time. The walls were exposed, and there were all these dead children lined up in the wall spaces. It was very cold, and I felt bad for them so I looked through the garbage and found some scrap fabric and wool and made them some clothing to keep them warm. I heard the police enter the building and I tried to hide. That was when I woke up from the nightmare.

The children represent parts of myself that were lost and died because of abuse at the hands of my parents. Feeling abandon and betrayed by the people that were suppose to  protect me.

This was part of a nightmare I had about 20 years ago. I revisited it about a year ago and asked myself; How would this look if I were to make it into an art piece. A few months later I had a dream that I had used a thick block of wood that I painted the colour of green the house I grew up in was painted. Along the right side of the wood was a rusted metal frame with holes in it, and in there were the dead children.

When I woke up a memory of me standing over a small dead tree came to me. I was in grade 1 when we were all given a small tree to take home and plant. My father dug the hole and then backed up to get the tree and stepped on the tree killing it. He patted me on the head and said he was sorry as he walked away leaving me standing there still not comprehending what had just happened.

Music Box is “Hush Little Baby, Don’t Say a Word”

Hush Little Baby, Don’t Say a Word,

Papa’s gonna buy you a mockingbird.

And if that mockingbird won’t sing,

Papa’s gonna buy you a diamond ring.

And if that diamond ring turns to brass,

Papa’s gonna buy you a looking glass.

And if that looking glass gets broke,

Pap’s gonna buy you a billy goat.

And if that billy goat won’t pull,

Pap’s gonna buy you a cart and bull.

And if that cart and bull turn over,

Papa’s gonna buy you a dog named Rover.

And if that dog named Rover won’t bark,

Papa’s gonna buy you a horse and cart.

And if that horse and cart fall down,

You’ll still be the sweetest little baby in town!
